Idaho schools chief submits $1.34-billion budget request
Tom Luna, Idaho state schools superintendent, acknowledged that he would have to revamp his budget request if any of the three "Students Come First" laws, which are the subject of recall initiatives on the November ballot, are reversed.

Colorado, Wyoming universities proceed with plans to sell SE Wyoming ranch
The Y Cross Ranch in southeastern Wyoming was donated to the University of Wyoming Foundation and Colorado State University Research Foundation in 1997 for the purpose of providing hands-on agricultural education, with a condition that the ranch not be sold for 14 years, and now those universities intend to sell the ranch in November, despite threats from the donor to sue the universities for not adequately using the ranch as intended.

During his speech at the Democratic National Convention, Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer recalled the week he spent with then-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in Iraq and Afghanistan, and provided details on why he believes Romney failed Massachusetts as its governor.

Wyoming legislators say federal health care exchange likely
During a meeting Thursday of the Wyoming Legislature's Joint Labor, Health and Social Services Committee, legislators acknowledged that it was unlikely the state would have a health care exchange plan ready by the Jan. 1 deadline, and that a federal health care exchange would likely be in place on Jan. 1, 2014.

Idaho food co-op revamps to address Whole Foods' challenge
To meet an increased demand for organic, natural and specialty foods, Whole Foods is adding hundreds of new stores, including in Boise, where the Boise Co-op is taking steps to make it competitive with the giant retailer.

Wind-power developer schedules open houses on Wyoming project
Power Co. of Wyoming, which received federal approval in July of its proposed 1,000-turbine Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project near Rawlins, will hold seven open houses on the project, beginning with one in Baggs on Sept. 9 and concluding with one in Casper on Sept. 25.

Northwest ski areas upgrade lifts, add run
Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Idaho and Lookout Pass on the Montana-Idaho border have upgraded lifts on their bunny hills, and the Silver Mountain Resort in Idaho has a new run.
