Samaritan House provides refuge for homeless in Northwest Montana
Northwest Montana has the third-largest homeless population in the state, and Samaritan House in Kalispell works to provide temporary shelter for about 10 percent of that population, with 23 rooms dedicated to serve veterans and 65 other rooms.

Officials, residents celebrate deal to protect Wyoming Range
There was much celebration last Friday at the Snow King Resort as Susan Thomas, the widow of U.S. Sen. Craig Thomas, who fought to his dying day to protect the Wyoming Range from energy development, along with former Gov. Dave Freudenthal, Gov. Matt Mead and others gathered at the Wyoming resort to toast the Trust for Public Land's deal with PXP Exploration to buy out leases owned by the Texas company.

USFS awards $4.5M for restoration work on Idaho wildfire
The Trinity Ridge Fire in the Boise National Forest in Idaho has burned 229 square miles, and the U.S. Forest Service announced this week that it would spend $2.1 million to spread straw mulch on burned areas in three watersheds and spend another $2 million to improve roads and streambed crossings.

Wildfires in remote areas of Colorado continue to burn
Smoke from a 300-acre wildfire in Rocky Mountain National Park was obscuring the skies in nearby Estes Park on Tuesday, and in southwestern Colorado, the Goblin Fire was burning near the Weminuche Wilderness.

Wyoming game officials ask public not to feed mule deer
The drought has taken a heavy toll on rangelands in Wyoming, including winter range of mule deer and antelope, but state game officials are asking that the public not provide supplemental feed to mule deer as that does not guarantee their survival and creates more problems than it solves.

Montana PSC candidates debate in Missoula
Gail Gutsche, the Democratic incumbent seeking re-election to District 4 of the Montana Public Services Commission, said she favored conservation and development of wind and solar resources, while Bob Lake, her Republican challenger, championed changes in taxation policy to keep energy prices down.

Hill, Bullock debate differences at Montana gubernatorial debate
At a debate Tuesday night in Billings, Montana gubernatorial candidates Democrat Steve Bullock and Republican Rick Hill disagreed on tax policy, abortion and medical marijuana. Libertarian Ron Vandevender was not invited to participate.

Days after Wal-Mart deal announced, Idaho creamery shuts down plant
Nelson-Ricks Creamery Company will still be able to fulfill its contract to provide Wal-Mart with cheese from Idaho, but the small company will not be filling those orders with cheese from its Rexburg plant, as production there will shut down at the end of this month.

Factory in Utah to shut down after new owner sends manufacturing work to Idaho
Idaho-based Rocky Mountain Hardware Inc. has been hired by Corrine LLC, the new owner of the hardware manufacturing plant formerly Stone River Bronze/Hoppe, U.S.A in Corrine, to produce the hardware previously made at the Utah plant, which will close today, putting 30 people out of work.
